Black bears are very frequent visitors at this rec

Black bears are very frequent visitors at this recently built custom home in the Beaverdam valley of North Asheville. The area might have the highest bear population of anywhere in the county. If I were trying to mimic the coloring of our local bears on a home this would be it. All black with a bit of gold on the face. 🐻

At times appearing tucked in and modest, and other times appearing proud and grandiose, this home has a few different faces, and we like them all.

This is a custom home we recently finished in the Beaverdam area of NAVL for a lovely young family. 3 bed, 2.5 bath plus office. 2 story but hard to tell in this fish eye pov. Lots of really incredible interior finishes and design in this one. Once we get some pro 📸 we will be sharing more from this gem.

Back in 2013 we had a client request to design and

Back in 2013 we had a client request to design and build an all concrete home…on a budget. After much consideration, we agreed to construct this home using entirely pre-cast concrete walls, known as @superiorwalls . 2 levels with a concrete floor at mid span. It was basically like building 2 homes in one because of the required procedures of setting, backfilling, pouring and setting another round of walls on top. This was built in the Kenilworth neighborhood in Asheville on an in-fill lot. During the construction of the home our good friends at @modernashevillerealestate came by for a tour and published a blog about this #brutalist inspired home. This article found a reader who reached out to let me know that one day he too would like to build a similar home, made entirely of concrete. Since that time in 2013 he would touch base every few years to let me know he still plans to build someday. Well last year he reached out again and said it’s time. We spent the last year designing and redesigning an all concrete home, again we ended up using @superiorwalls . 10 years from that first email to breaking ground on his home. Scroll through to end to see a render of the new project. Another Asheville city in-fill lot going concrete modern. I hope the neighbors approve, I’m sure I’ll hear all the opinions, as is customary. It’s not everyday that we are given full creative liberties when designing a custom home. But this day we were.

10 years ago, upon completion of another brutalist styled concrete home, I received an email from someone saying that one day they will call me to design and build one for them. Every few years this person would check in just to say he was still dreaming about building his home and would let me know when they are ready. Well about 6 months ago he followed through and hired us to begin designing his home. The only condition was that we use concrete.

This home is situated on an in-fill city lot in a north Asheville neighborhood. The design is inspired by Brutalism with a nod to the Art Deco history of our area through the use of exposed concrete and glass block exterior walls. Rounded corners and archways soften the hard exterior, reflecting the nature of our surrounding rolling mountains.
